UPDATE ON THE 25TH WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE

The 25th World Scout Jamboree is underway with more than 43,000 Scouts and volunteers from around the world experiencing the event. Over the past few days an extreme heatwave and humidity has caused some challenging conditions for young people and volunteers taking part in the event.

To ensure the health, safety and well-being of all participants, the Host is working together with World Scouting and the Korean Government to respond to the heatwave by increasing shaded areas and water around programme activities, making more air-conditioned spaces and transportation available, deploying more doctors and nurses, and increasing the availability of medical facilities and ambulances.

Additional support and resources are also being deployed to assist with food distribution and cleaning services to ensure the campsite is safe, accessible and sanitary for all participants.

Thank you to the thousands of volunteers who have stepped up in countless ways to offer support and assistance, flexibility and patience, to make this Jamboree possible. The Scouting community is grateful for you!

Gilwell Reunions

Lord Baden-Powell organized and ran the first training course for Scouters at Gilwell Park in England in 1919. At the end of the course, to celebrate the fellowship of Scouting, he invested the Scouters as members of the 1st Gilwell Park Troop by presenting them with two each from a set of Zulu beads he had received as a gift when he was in Africa. The tradition has continued to this day around the world.

Today, Scouters who complete their Wood Badge Training are given the “two wooden beads” (replicas) These are the mark of an individual who has invested the time (five days minimum) needed to complete the Wood Badge training.

Each year, during the 1st weekend in the month of September, Gilwell Reunions are held as an opportunity for those who have completed their Wood Badge (aka Gilwellians) to meet together again.

On September 29, 1990, the 3rd Gilwell Reunion was held at Wesley College grounds in Belize City with the participation of five Gilwellians.  Rev. John Smith from the Methodist Church was the training Commissioner back then.
