Plaque Unveiling Ceremony

November 23, 2021, saw the unveiling of a plaque on the “Sir Colville N. Young Building” home of Scouting in Belize, recognizing the generous donation of $200,000.00 made by the Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan) towards the construction of the building which will serve the Scouts of Belize as their headquarters and main office for years to come.

On November 28, 2018, at the request of the Directors of the Belize Scout Foundation (BSF), Executive Director of the Foundation Hilberto B. Riverol submitted a formal request for funding to the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) towards the construction of the “Sir Colville N. Young Building”.  This was shortly followed by a meeting on December 2, 2018, between Mrs. Bi-yin CHIEN, Deputy Counselor at the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and Hilberto B. Riverol to discuss the project.  A formal grant proposal was then submitted to the Embassy followed by numerous correspondence through the months of December 2019 and January 2020.

On January 19, 2019, at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the BSF were informed that the Taiwan Embassy, on behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan) had approved a grant of $200,000.00 towards the construction of the building.

On February 25, 2019, the donation was presented to the Patron of the BSF, Sir Colville N. Young at the groundbreaking ceremony for the building and two years and ten months later, the BSF unveiled a plaque recognizing the generous contribution towards the building by the Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Present for the occasion were the Most Honorable Sir Colville N. Young, Former Governor-General and Patron of the BSF, in whose honor the building was named, His Excellency Mr. David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador – The Republic of China (Taiwan), Mrs. Bi-yin Chien, Deputy Counselor – Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Dr. Rene Villanueva, Chairman of the BSF, Mr. Francis Woods, Chairman of the Building Sub-Committee, Mr. Ryan Wrobel, Secretary of the BSF and Mr. Fernando Oliva, President of The Scout Association of Belize.

After numerous speeches and following the remarks by His Excellency Mr. David Kuan-Chou Chien, the plaque was unveiled by six of the invited guests, the Most Honorable Sir Colville N. Young, His Excellency Mr. David Kuan-Chou Chien, Dr. Rene Villanueva, Mr. Francis Woods, Mr. Ryan Wrobel and Mr. Fernando Oliva.

The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Mr. Fernando Oliva, followed by a tour of the building and a serving of snacks and refreshments.

Blessed and happy birthday celebration on his 89th birthday

The Chairman and Directors of the Belize Scout Foundation wish The Most Honourable Sir Colville N. Young GCMG, Patron of the Belize Scout Foundation, a blessed and happy day as he celebrates his 89th birthday today November 20, 2021.

Sir Colville Norbert Young GCMG MBE is a Belizean who served as the 2nd Governor-General of Belize. He was appointed as the Governor-General in 1993, taking office on November 17 of that year, and was knighted in 1994.

On Friday, April 30th, the Government of Belize bid farewell to Belize’s Head of State and representative of the British Monarchy, Governor-General (GG) His Excellency Sir Colville Young who officially stepped down.

A departure ceremony was held for the 88-year-old longest-serving Governor-General in Belize and the Commonwealth. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking government officials, the military, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Belize.

Everyone paid tribute to The Most Honourable Sir Colville N. Young, who left an impeccable legacy of art, music, and literature.
